2004-2007 Sea Ray 220 Select Specs and Review [Video]

Released as the successor of the 220 Signature Select, the 2004-2007 Select 220 was a mid-sized luxury Sea Ray bowrider. She enjoyed a well-designed hull constructed with high-quality features and finishes.

Let’s drill into the details and talk about the 220 Select in detail!

2004-2007 Sea Ray 220 Select Review

Body and Features

Sea Ray marketed their first 220 Select Bow Rider in 1994 and 1995.

However, this first-generation model was often referred to as 220 Signature Select or just 220 Signature, which distinguishes her from the successor.

After 8 years of hiatus, the 220 returned with an entirely new hull, a much more modern top deck, and a plethora of innovative features.

The all-new 220 Select was built on a 21-degree deep-V hull measured in at an overall length of 23 feet with a trailerable beam of 8.5 feet.

Her claimed dry weight was 3,850 pounds, which increased to an estimated gross trailering weight of 5,500-6,000 pounds on a tandem axle trailer and liquids.

(Interestingly, the predecessor 220 Signature was 7 inches shorter and her beam was 4 inches smaller, yet she was 150 pounds heavier.)

Rated at 10 persons or 1,600 pounds, the all-new top deck of the 220 Select offered great comfort and plenty of free deck space.

Offered with many different seating layouts, each of them sharing the same swivel bucket helm seat and bow lounge with full wraparound seating.

The port companion seat was available in two versions: a swivel bucket seat or a back-to-back lounger.

The most exciting part of the 220 Select was its unique asymmetrical aft architecture, shared with her smaller 20-footer sibling.

Located on the starboard side, the relatively small bench seat and sun pad extended two-thirds across the beam.

In the remaining space on the port side, you could find a deep bucket seat and an unpadded walk-thru transom passage.

This aft lounge could also be opted for a larger sun pad and bench seat featuring a full-beam design.

As a rule of thumb, each of these floorplans shared the same extended swim platform housing a retractable reboarding ladder and a vent.

Standard features of the boat included a grab rail/ski eye unit, an audio system with a remote, an insulated ice chest, an anchor locker, cup holders, grab handles, mooring cleats, and eyelets.

The premium feel is enhanced by carefully selected materials and amenities including premium snap-in carpets, wood grain inserts, padded side panels and armrests, and the luxurious helm.

Simple yet practical, the latter had a car-like dashboard housing four analog gauges with chrome bezels, speakers, a switch panel, a sun visor, a stereo remote, and more.

The deck also enjoyed many practical storage units including a floor ski locker, glove box, aft storage, and integrated side panel and seat storage.

Engines and Performance

The standard power of the 220 Select was a MerCruiser 5.0L MPI with Alpha 1 MCM sterndrive propulsion.

Rated at 260hp, this 4-stroke, multi-port injected V8 marine engine could be opted for a more advanced Bravo III leg.

The high-end engine option was an MX 6.2L Bravo II MCM sterndrive engine that delivered 320hp out of the box.

Performance wise, the boat topped out at around 50 mph with the 5.0L MPI and in the mid-50s with a 6.2L engine package.

Thanks to her heavy hull with deep-V architecture, the boat even cruised comfortably on small and moderate chops.

She could also tow wakeboarders, skiers, and tubers with ease. Installing an aftermarket wake tower with racks and some ballast turned this bowrider into a great “DIY wakeboard boat.”

Takeaways

The 2004-2007 Sea Ray 220 Select carried over the legacy of the ancestor 220 Signature Select.

Contrary to her name, this popular runabout was 23 feet long and 8.5 feet wide. Under the hood, you could find MerCruiser 5.0L or 6.2L sterndrive engines that delivered 260 and 320hp, respectively.

Despite her 3,850 pounds of dry weight, the boat got on the plane fairly quickly and topped out in the low to mid-50s range depending on the engine package.

Sea Ray Select runabouts were famous for their high-quality features and reliability, and the 220 was no exception.

Their reputation for durability means they are still in demand on the used market. Depending on their year, condition, and engine options, their asking prices range between $15,000 and $30,000.

If you are looking for a bowrider of this size, you can’t go wrong with this model.

However, if you are open to alternatives, you may want to consider her closest relatives including the 200 Select, the more spacious 240 Select, or the deckboat-style 220 Sundeck.
