Only produced in 2002, the Yamaha LX2000 was a limited edition version of the proven LS2000 jet boat. Model-specific features of the LX included a unique color scheme, Bimini top, ski pylon, audio system, and custom carpets.

In this post, we’ll review this 2-stroke Yamaha jet boat and its key specifications.

2002 Yamaha LX2000 Review

Hull and Top Deck

Yamaha manufactured its extremely popular LS2000 from 1999 through 2003.

In the 2002 season, the Japanese manufacturer degraded the LS to an entry-level model and released her more featured variant under the name LX2000.

Compared to its base sibling the LX came standard with some luxury features, hence the name.

Her model-specific features included a Bimini top, snap-in carpet, retractable ski pole, and an audio system.

The latter featured a CD Player/Receiver, a remote control keypad, and marine-grade speakers.

While the LS had a white body and beige-white upholstery, the LX was designed with a flashy blue-white color scheme including a blue Bimini top.

Aside from these differences, the LS and LX were completely identical.

They shared the same V-shaped fiberglass hull and stylish bowrider-style top deck.

In terms of dimensions, the LS2000 measured 19.5 feet in length and had a beam of 8 feet.

She weighed 2,100 pounds dry and about 2,500 pounds with fuel, oil, and some basic gear.

Sitting on a single-axle trailer, you could expect her trailering weight to be roughly 3,000-3,200 pounds.

Rated for 7 passengers, the sporty top deck featured a bow lounge with two cushioned seats.

The cockpit was also fitted with two bucket seats and an aft bench seat for 3 passengers.

Each of these was well-designed and highly bolstered for maximum comfort and traction.

You could find plenty of storage units under the seats, which were completed with an under-floor ski storage locker and a glovebox.

The boat also had sun visors, and a fairly small sun pad with storage beneath.

A tiny swim platform protruded into the aft section and housed the Yamaha-exclusive jet pump clean-out ports.

These units ensured easy access to the pump, allowing you to clear debris and seaweed from the pump without placing the boat on the trailer or diving underwater.

Other standard features of the boat included navigation lights, eyelets, cleats, beverage holders, mirrors, a reboarding step, and a ski hook.

Instrumentation included a speedometer, tachometers, fuel gauge, and a low oil warning light.

Engines and Performance

The LX2000 shared its twin-engine configuration with the LS2000. Derived from Yamaha’s WaveRunner division, these non-powervalved 1200 Yamaha marine engines produced 135hp out of the box.

This is no surprise since these 2-stroke, 1311cc triples enjoyed many advanced technologies including triple Mikuni BN44 carburetors, a reed valve intake system, and a variable-rate oil injection system.

These were paired with two axial-flow, single-stage, 155mm jet pumps.

In addition to the aforementioned clean-out ports, they also enjoyed three-blade, stainless-steel impellers.

Thanks to the enclosed jet propulsion system and an 18-inch draft, the boat could reach very shallow areas.

She was also highly maneuverable but provided poor experience on anything but a glass surface and minimal chop.

Even though its attitude was less lively than its smaller predecessors like the Exciter 220 and Exciter 270, this Yamaha jet boat was still capable of very sharp turns and spins.

Under ideal conditions, the top speed of the XL2000 was in the mid-50s while its quick throttle response ensured a thrilling acceleration.

Running at WOT, she burned a combined 28 gph at 6750 RPM, which provided a full tank range of 80 miles.

Problems

Featuring no less than six carburetors, the dual 2-stroke engine package of the LX2000 required far more attention and care than modern 4-stroke marine engines.

Aside from the carbs, the oil lines also had to be regularly inspected and maintained.

Only a small malfunction in the lubrication system could cause oil starvation, which typically ended in an engine seizure.

This is why many owners converted their oil injection system to premix.

Other common complaints against the LX2000 were poor rough water performance and loud engine noise.

Takeaways

Produced as a one-year model, the 2002 Yamaha LX2000 was a fully equipped brother of the proven LS2000.

These models were almost equivalent, except for having different trim levels. They shared the same modified-V fiberglass hull, top deck, and 2x135hp Rotax engine package.

But unlike the LS, the LX (‘Luxury’) variant came standard with more bells and whistles, like a Bimini top, snap-in carpet, ski pole, audio system, and custom blue-white color scheme.

Despite their age and 2-stroke engines, these boats are still popular among used boat buyers.

This is no surprise since these types of 2-stroke jet boats are no longer manufactured.

Due to the regret of many fans, LX2000s rarely appear on used sites. If they do, their asking prices vary between $5,000 and $15,000.
